Little Truckee Fishing Report

Trout Creek Outfitters

This week, the flows on the Little Truckee are about as high as I’ve ever seen them, and this will arguably be more difficult to fish than the main river at this time, and here’s why. The Little Truckee is a smaller river system, when this river comes up it will overflow onto the banks creating more of a flood plain than the main Truckee which sees many more flooding events due to it being a freestone river. The main river will come up, but the water doesn’t typically flow over then banks, and this provides more soft water for the fish to hold in during high flows than the Little Truckee, which is either really fast water in the middle or flooded grass banks that can’t hold fish.

The best bet for fishable water on the Little Truckee will not actually be in the river, but instead where the river meets the lake at the inlet. Regardless of the high flows on the river, this will still fish well due to the fact that the river will lose velocity here as it feeds into Boca, and if the water is too fast, all you have to do is move downstream until you find a slower speed of water. Keep walking down until you run into fish, then you know you’re in the sweet spot.

This area has already been popular over the last few weeks and with the lack of other options available elsewhere, expect to fish around other anglers here. Please remain courteous of people and give everyone plenty of space and rotate around to give everyone equal opportunities in any given spot. This will also be a great place to launch a boat, raft or float tube and try more of the lake end of the inlet using steamers, nymphs under an indicator or some dries in the mornings and evenings.
