Great Fishing on Crooked River

The warm weather we’ve had through the past week has provided an opportunity for great fishing. The fish are a little less sluggish and more willing to feed on the small Midges and Mayflies that are present through the winter. The best approach is to fish these little Midge and Mayfly nymphs below a small indicator through the slow, deep runs which hold the best numbers of fish. Work the likely holding water thoroughly and be ready for light takes which sometimes barely show on the indicator if at all. Afternoons provide some opportunity to fish dries, with Midges and BWOs coming off in varying strengths depending on the day. Look for the BWO action to be strongest on cloudy afternoons, the Midge hatch has been a little more consistent but often requires a willingness to work with tiny flies and light tippet to successfully imitate the natural insects and initiate a strike. This is the type of weather that provides the best fishing on the Crooked through the winter, so don’t hesitate to get out there.
