Mixed bag of good days and slow days out here this week

We have seen a mixed bag of good days and slow days out here this week. While there’s certainly fish to be had, the unseasonable weather has seemed to keep fish a bit confused as to what time of year it really is. The midge bite continues to get stronger as the lake temperature warms, and these will be the main bugs for indicator fishing coming into April. Make sure you have a good variety of colors, sizes and shapes in your fly box to find out what these fish are looking for on any given day.

As we come into spring, expect to continue to downsize your offering, with 12’s, 14’s, and 16’s becoming more effective, particularly on days with high sun and glassy water. The strip bite will also become more effective on such days, and on beaches with gradual drop offs like The Nets or Windless as the start to transition into their pre-spawn shallow water cruising routine. When fishing these shallower beaches, a type-3 sinking line and boobies or beetles will be the best tools for the job to keep your flies near the bottom, but not on the bottom. At this rate, we expect to see excellent late season fishing out here this year, and while normally the fish seek deeper water by mid-May, odds are there will be good fishing through most of June.
