The health of the wild trout in the Truckee River is about as good as we’ve ever seen thanks mostly to a series of good water years. This doesn’t mean that fishing on the Truckee will be easy, because it never is. It does mean that the quality and numbers are there and when we combine that with the excellent conditions on the river right now, this is shaping up to be a summer for the books. With air temps forecasted into the mid 80’s here in Truckee and mid 90’s in Reno, expect the water temps to rise rapidly. This will cause the better window of fishing to quickly shift to the morning hours. Remember, we open at 7:00 now, come visit us before you get on the water, get a few bugs and get the latest on conditions! Odds are we are still a couple weeks away from them reaching 68 degrees here in Truckee, at which point we would encourage anglers to focus solely on the morning hours, but as of now fishing is still an option all day. As we head into summertime conditions, we are focusing on riffles and pocket water. You may be surprised what kind of water you’ll find fish out of! We are seeing a large variety of aquatic insects on the river right now, with the main ones being PMDs, caddis, yellow sallies, green drakes, and golden stones. We are also finding success on crawdads fished on the euro rods, and these are especially effective for those of you that like to cover water quickly and move multiple miles in a day. With the amount of caddis we’ve been seeing here on the California side, we are doing better than normal using caddis pupa or larva imitations such as a Fox’s Poopah, Caddie Shack or Walt’s Worm in olive. With stoneflies and crawdads in the system, those fishing the indicator will find good luck on the lighter colored Pat’s Rubberlegs or a Dead Drift Cray, and anyone on the euro stick should be fishing a T.J. Hooker or a Mudbug as their anchor right now. With so many hatches happening right now, your smaller fly can really be a large number of things right now, just make sure you’re fishing down on the bottom and getting good drifts!
