Baum Lake is not fishing easy but the fish still respond with the right approach

The Fly Shop

Report Date:

Current Lake Conditions: This week on Baum Lake, our friend and customer Richard Thompson shares a report on his fly fishing experience:

"I had no real hatches during my visit. There were some small olives and tiny cahills but not in sufficient numbers to keep the trout up and feeding. I did take a few nice rainbows using a small dark olive nymph 10" below a dry IF I could get the fly in front of a rising fish...if I could find rising trout. I did find a fair number of fat browns feeding in the moving water below the dam behind the houses at the hatchery. These trout took small rusty spinner patterns below the surface."

A small dark olive nymph could be a #18 Olive PT or a #16-18 Micro Mayfly (see the nymph list below for links)

The Fly Shop's  Tips: Fish midges in the early AM hours. Best results are obtained fishing sub-surface. Stripping and retrieving Leeches on intermediate sinking lines is a great tactic as is suspending #22 black Zebra Midges or Mercer's Gidget under a small indicator. Try a black A.P. on a slow retrieve. There are a lot of scuds in Baum Lake, making various scud patterns an obvious choice.

Baum Lake is an ideal fishing destination for pontoon boats, float tubes and small prams.

Fishing an Intermediate sinking line with a small PT nymph can produce a bent fly rod. The key is SLOW strips! Nothing in Baum Lake is moving fast. Use lighter, longer leaders. Delicate dry-fly presentations will produce more strikes.

Road Conditions: No road restrictions for this area.
