Current River Conditions: The Klamath river is fishing great! Expect to find numbers of juvenile fish and adults going as big as 5 lbs. Daytime temps have been cold, but it's a fair trade for good fishing. Typically, the Klamath will continue to produce good steelhead fishing through mid March.

No big changes as far as flies go. Yarn eggs like Micro-Spawns in steelhead orange, salmon egg and shrimp pink have been working. Don't leave out Boles Bazooka's in shrimp pink, SH orange and sockeye. Nymphs like Poxyback Hare's Ears, Amber Wing Princes, Pats Rubber Legs are good choices.

The Fly Shop's?? Tips: The most productive method for getting tight to adult steelhead on this river, in respect to the upper sections near Hornbrook, CA., is suspending nymphs and eggs under an indicator. Use 2x-3x leader and AB or AA split shot. Fish at depth between 5-7 ft. You might consider fishing deeper and heavier the further down stream you venture during winter months.

Fly rods from 6 wt to 7 wt are perfect in lengths of 9' to 9'.5. Switch rods are popular and make casting very easy. Spey rods fit in well on the Klamath river. Look for steelhead in the pools and shallow tailouts.
