Truckee River

The Truckee River flows have dropped since our last report. We are currently below seasonal averages at 275 CFS at the downtown gauge. The fish we are finding are very happy and healthy, but the lower water can make fishing a little more challenging so take your time when approaching the water. The drop in flow has the water crystal clear and cold. Mid day water temps on the Truckee River are 45 degrees. This has impacted where we are finding fish in the river as well as when the fish are becoming active.

Finding slower and deeper water has been key to locating the trout most consistently. Some fish are in medium paced water when they are feeding heavily, but for the most part fish are in water that is slower than a walking pace. Smaller, lighter flies can make ESN a challenge. Consider using lighter material in your leader to better suspend your midge and baetis patterns. Indicators are also a great choice for fishing the slow deep water to gain longer drifts.

We haven’t seen many rising fish, but with a colder weather system pushing next week look for baetis to start hatching on overcast days.

Flies we suggest: Spanish Bullet, Quill Jig, Hot Spot, CDC Red Tag, Zebra Midge, Baetis Nymphs, Carot, The Ticket, Para Adams, Para Olive, Stimulator, Psycho May BWO, Olive Parachute, Para Adams
