The Crooked has been fishing really well. Be prepared for the heat if you head out in the next few days, the canyon has been getting hot. Pale morning dun and caddis hatches have produced some great fish over the past week, mainly in the late afternoon. As we move into early fall, we can expect the hatches to get a bit thicker, and eventually, we will see a return of the blue wing olive hatch. In the meantime, terrestrials are great choices when nothing seems to be hatching. Nymphing has been good with all the typical patterns. PMD nymphs, caddis pupa, BWO nymphs, midges, and other small mayfly nymph patterns, like two-bit hookers or tailwater tinies, are all great go-to nymphs. During the heat, make sure to land and release fish quickly. Let’s hope the summer gives way to fall quickly and winter blasts us with snow.
