The Upper Deschutes continues to fish well as we move deeper into June, with improving insect activity and plenty of opportunities throughout.

PMDs and caddis are now the primary players, with fish becoming increasingly willing to look up during the warmer parts of the day. Afternoon and evening hatch windows have been the most productive, while terrestrials are beginning to play a larger role.

Nymphing remains the most consistent day-to-day approach. PMD nymphs, caddis pupa, perdigons, Frenchies, and smaller attractor patterns are all producing fish. Anglers targeting larger browns below Wickiup have found success fishing bigger stonefly nymphs and streamers tight to structure, undercut banks, and woody cover.

For those exploring the headwaters above Crane Prairie, dry fly opportunities continue to improve with PMDs, caddis, attractors, ants, and beetles all worth carrying. Water conditions remain favorable, and fish are spreading throughout the system as seasonal insect activity continues to build.

Recommended flies include PMD Sparkle Duns, X-Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Purple Perdigons, Frenchies, Two Bit Hookers, Jigged PMDs, Pat's Rubber Legs, and a variety of small streamer patterns for anglers searching for larger browns.
