Lots of weather changes

Trout Creek Outfitters

Report Date:

Thanks to the abnormally cold weather last week, the Truckee has narrowly avoided any hoot owl restrictions as we head into July, the warm weather in this weeks forecast will likely change things quickly in this respect, so if fishing later in the week, be sure to focus on the mornings and consider bringing a thermometer with you if you want to extend you day out much past 2 or so. The hatches have been a bit less active this week with the shift in weather, and we are seeing fewer caddis and yellow sallies, but still good numbers of PMDs and a fair amount of golden stone adults. The dry dropper fishing is still a great option this time of year because of not only the golden stones, but also because we are beginning to see a good number of grasshoppers around too. With the crawdads continuing to molt, using these patterns as your anchor on a euro rod has also effective and a great way to focus on the larger fish. With a crawdad, covering water is an important factor, if a fish wants this fly, they will typically take it within the first half dozen drifts. One thing worth noting is the increased recreational use on the Truckee during the 4th of July weekend, with so many in town, you will see a lot of non-fishing traffic on the river. People swimming, tubing, etc. Because of this, we reiterate recommending to focusing on the early morning hours as well as heading down into the canyon where less recreating happens.
